Kelly and Peter’s wedding at the Dockmaster Building, at The Wharf, is proof that even a full day of September rain can’t dim the joy of a couple who can’t stop smiling at each other. Their entire celebration unfolded indoors across some of the Wharf’s most iconic spaces, creating a cozy, intimate atmosphere full of warmth, music, and timeless style.
From start to finish, their day was a perfect reminder that documentary photography shines brightest when the weather forces everyone indoors. You get emotion, movement, and connection, without distractions.

Getting Ready at The Wharf
Kelly and Peter both got ready steps away from the Dockmaster Building, surrounded by soft window light and the hum of the waterfront below. Kelly had her hair and makeup beautifully done by Bridal By Sarah Khan Artistry, creating a clean, elegant look that lasted through the entire rainy day.
Their hotel, Intercontinental DC Wharf, offered modern, warm spaces that were perfect for unposed, documentary moments. No staging needed… everyone was already overflowing with excitement.

A Rainy Ceremony at the Dockmaster Building
The rain never stopped, but the light inside the Dockmaster Building was golden and calm. Sara with Bella Notte DC designed a ceremony space that felt intimate and inviting, with florals from Ritual Floral Studio.
I love photographing weddings at The Wharf. The floor-to-ceiling windows create the most flattering natural light, even on the cloudiest day. The rain streaking down the glass only made it more cinematic.

Portraits at The Wharf: A Documentary Approach
Because everything was indoors, we stayed close and used the architecture, reflections, and window light of the Dockmaster Building for portraits. No posing necessary: Kelly and Peter naturally fell into their rhythm together. Walking, laughing, holding onto each other… that’s all we need for portraits that feel real.
This is one of my favorite things about a wedding at The Dockmaster Building: even if the weather turns, the space itself gives you everything you need for beautiful images.

A Joyful Reception at Ilili DC
After the ceremony, guests walked over to Ilili DC, one of the Wharf’s most stunning restaurants, for an evening filled with Mediterranean food, live energy, and heartfelt toasts.
Zandi Entertainment handled both ceremony and reception music, creating the perfect shift from soft strings to a lively dance floor. The candlelit tables were completed with linens from BBJ La Tavola. The vintage-textured napkins from Something Vintage gave the entire room a warm, elegant glow.

Kelly and Peter didn’t leave the dance floor… Ever! Their people came ready to celebrate, and it showed in every candid moment.

One of my favorite behind-the-scenes moments happened right after the ceremony. Kelly wanted a shorter, more playful look for the reception. So her wedding planner quietly stepped in with a pair of scissors, kneeling on the floor and trimming the dress!

It was done with the kind of ease that only an experienced planner can bring to a wedding day. While Sara transformed Kelly’s gown, Peter slipped into his second suit for the evening. It was such an honest, unscripted moment of teamwork and trust. It was the perfect example of how the right people keep a wedding day flowing effortlessly.

What I Loved Most About This Day
Even with a full day of rain, Kelly and Peter’s wedding felt bright, fun, and effortless. Having everything at The Wharf meant they never worried about weather or logistics. Every space was walkable, beautiful, and designed to keep guests comfortable.
For couples planning a wedding at The Wharf, here’s what this day proves:
- Rain doesn’t matter when your venue is gorgeous inside.

- Ilili DC is perfect for couples who want a stylish, lively dinner party vibe.

Most of all, your wedding becomes unforgettable when you let the day unfold just as it is.
