National Cathedral School Wedding Guide

Last dance for bride and groom at the National Cathedral School in Washington DC

Venue Snapshot

National Cathedral School sits on the grounds next to the Washington National Cathedral in DC, but it’s an all-girls school, not part of the cathedral itself. It gives couples a budget-friendly way to get a prime DC location without the price tag that usually comes with it.

Who This Venue Is For

This is a great fit for couples who want a central, historic DC location but are working with a real budget. You get the feel of being next to one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks without paying cathedral prices for it.

What Stands Out

Most people don’t expect a wedding at a school to feel this beautiful. The interior spaces are gracious and historic, especially Hearst Hall, which is a Beaux-Arts building that used to be the school’s original residence. Being right next door to the Cathedral means couples get that historic backdrop even though the two are separate institutions.

Photo + Timeline Considerations

Bishop’s Garden is my go-to spot for portraits here. It works at pretty much any time of day, which takes a lot of pressure off building the timeline around light. If weather forces the ceremony indoors, the venue shifts everything (ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception) into the same indoor space, so the day still flows smoothly even with a full rain plan in place.

Practical Details

  • Type: School campus with an indoor event space and outdoor garden grounds
  • Indoor/Outdoor: Both, with a full indoor backup plan for ceremony, cocktail hour, and reception
  • Ceremony capacity: Grace Chapel seats approximately 300
  • Starting price: Ceremony $2,000, Reception $3,500
  • Catering: Alcohol service is permitted only through FLIK, the venue’s in-house catering partner, or an approved outside caterer with proper licensing. I’ve seen outside catering companies used here, so couples aren’t locked into one option
  • Parking: Paid parking through the Cathedral, either at the Cathedral parking garage or nearby surface lots close to Bishop’s Garden
  • Rental requests need to go in at least two weeks ahead of the event date

Planning Info for Couples

  • Address: 3612 Woodley Road NW, Washington, DC 20016
  • Website: ncsrentals.com
  • Insurance: Renters need to provide their own event liability insurance, plus liquor liability insurance if using an outside caterer serving alcohol
  • Anything special to ask when booking: worth confirming which indoor space serves as the ceremony backup and what add-on equipment costs (piano, A/V, coat racks, etc. all carry separate fees)

My Perspective

My favorite part of shooting here is the ceremony space surrounded by cherry trees. There’s something about getting married inside a school that feels genuinely different from any other venue I photograph. The bride got ready in the library, and the groom got ready in the staff room, which made for a fun and unexpected set of getting-ready photos. The inside of the school is beautiful on its own, and being right next to the National Cathedral means couples get to enjoy that historic setting as part of the day, even without an official connection to it.
