10 Fun Ideas to Propose to Your SO

As a proposal photographer in the DMV, I have witnessed a dozen ways couples have chosen to propose through my lens. If you’re still seeking inspiration for your proposal, I’ve compiled 10 surprise proposal ideas for you. And if you need a proposal photographer, you can learn more about my services here.

  1. Scavenger Hunt Proposal

If you and your partner are into it, you could create a scavenger hunt that leads them to significant places in your relationship, like where you first met, had your first date, etc. Have each location hold a clue or a memory until they finally reach you at the end, where you’ll propose and I’ll be there to capture it!

  2. Memory Book Proposal

Compile a memory book filled with photos, ticket stubs, and mementos from your relationship. End the book with a heartfelt proposal written by you. For example, you could be on a bench at one of your favorite spots in Washington DC. Navy Yard and The Yard Park are great places to propose, with a few benches facing the water.

  3. Jigsaw Puzzle Proposal

That one is perfect if doing puzzles together is your thing! You could create a custom jigsaw puzzle featuring a picture of the two of you or a meaningful scene from your relationship. As your partner completes the puzzle, the final piece could be the ring box or a message asking them to marry you.

  4. Adventure Proposal

This one is straightforward. Pick a location that is accessible, like the Mount Vernon Trail, from which you can see the Washington Monument. Alternatively, consider a kayaking trip on the Potomac River. The Arboretum is also a great place for a leisurely walk in nature and a sneaky proposal to your partner.

  5. Escape Room Proposal

The DMV area has dozen of space rooms! I am no expert so Reddit have a list of the best escape rooms depending on where you are located (DC, Virginia or Maryland) and what you are into (puzzle, adventures, etc…). When booking the escape room, try to arrange for the final puzzle to reveal your proposal message, along with the ring!

  6. Surprise Party Proposal

Organize a surprise party for your partner with friends and family. As the celebration reaches its peak, take center stage and propose in front of everyone, surrounded by love and joy. Or if you think they’ll hate that, propose and plan the party for after!

  7. Pet Proposal

If you have a furry friend together, involve them in the proposal! Attach the ring to your pet’s collar or have them carry a sign with the proposal message. Your partner will be delighted by the unexpected twist.

  8. Private Serenade Proposal

Hire a musician or a local band to serenade your partner with their favorite love songs. Arrange for the performance to take place in a picturesque setting, such as a garden or a rooftop terrace. As the music fills the air, take the opportunity to propose.

  9. Bookstore Proposal

Plan a surprise visit to your partner’s favorite bookstore. Work with the staff beforehand to set up a display featuring books that spell out “Will You Marry Me?” As you browse together, lead them to the display and reveal the hidden message before popping the question.

  10. On a Rooftop in adams morgan

Book a rooftop bar in Adams Morgan for stunning city views and propose as the sun sets over the cityscape. The laid-back yet buzzing atmosphere of this neighborhood adds a cool, contemporary vibe to your special moment. Check out Roofers Union, a great bar if you don’t know where to start.

Remember, the most important thing is to tailor the proposal to your partner’s preferences and personality, ensuring it’s a moment they’ll cherish forever.
