14 Most Romantic Restaurants in DC

Washington DC has no shortage of restaurants that set the mood for a memorable date night, anniversary dinner, or just a night out with someone you love. As a wedding and proposal photographer who spends a lot of time in this city, I’ve picked up a good sense of which spots actually deliver on romance and which ones just photograph well on Instagram. Here are 15 of my favorites, spanning nearly every neighborhood and price point in the city.

Fine Dining and Splurge-Worthy

1. Fiola Mare

Georgetown’s waterfront setting offers sweeping views of the Potomac, along with excellent Italian seafood. Ask for a window table at sunset, and you’ll understand why this spot shows up on nearly every “best view” list in the city. One of my best visits there was to document an intimate wedding. The staff was amazing to work with, and the food was incredible. This is one of the best locations in Washington DC, hands down.

2. L’Ardente

This Michelin-starred Penn Quarter spot serves refined Italian in a small, dimly lit dining room that feels made for a quiet conversation. It’s a splurge, but it’s the kind of splurge that earns its price tag. I’ve been there a few times now, with other wedding vendors, and they all fall in love with the place. The food is out of this world, and I can say that French chef David is one of the most talented chefs in DC. If you go there, the tiramisu is a must-try.

3. Bresca

Another Michelin-starred pick, Bresca calls itself a “neo-bistro” and leans into playful, modernized French dishes on 14th Street. The cocktail program is just as much of a draw as the food.

4. 1789 Restaurant

Housed in a historic Georgetown townhouse, 1789 leans into old-DC charm with fireplaces, antique prints, and a dining room that feels like a step back in time. This is the pick for couples who want old-world romance over trendy plating.

5. Rasika

Rasika brought modern Indian cuisine to DC’s fine dining scene, and it hasn’t lost momentum since. The Penn Quarter location is sleek and a little dressier, which makes it a strong choice for a special occasion. This was one of my first restaurant visits in DC when I moved here, and I still remember it to this day. I went back a few months ago, and they still have it. The food and the service are impeccable.

Classic Bistro and French

6. Le Diplomate

If you want a classic Parisian brasserie experience without leaving 14th Street, Le Diplomate delivers every time. It’s a reliable pick when you want candlelight, good wine, and a menu that never disappoints. As a French person, this is not my go-to when I miss France. There are far better restaurants for that, but the vibe is right, and I do feel like I’m in a real bistro in Paris when I’m there.

7. Annabelle

Tucked into the Kalorama neighborhood, Annabelle keeps things quietly refined. The service is polished without feeling stiff, which makes it a good pick for couples who want an elegant night without a lot of fuss. It’s one of my favorite restaurants, and I love every item on their list. I did capture an intimate lunch wedding there, and it was perfection.

8. Lapis

Lapis brings Afghan cuisine to Adams Morgan in a dining room filled with antiques and lamplight. The atmosphere alone makes it worth the visit, and the food backs it up. I love their chef’s menu, where you get to try all their food without having to choose only one plate.

9. Iron Gate

Iron Gate holds the title of DC’s oldest continuously running restaurant, and it shows in the best way. The wisteria-covered garden courtyard is one of the few truly outdoor romantic dining spaces in the city, which makes it a favorite for warmer months.
